€19K WASHED DOWNRIVER IN FERMOY
Two weeks after a number of large, heavy duty sandbags were placed alongside the fish ladder at the weir in the Blackwater river in Fermoy as a temporary measure to help salmon make their way upstream during the spawning season, all but one of them have been washed away.
“A disgrace” and “an appalling waste of money” is how Councillor Olive Corcoran described the exercise which cost €19,000. Cllr John Murphy, who had pressed for the works to be done, said he was disappointed the measure hadn’t lasted longer.
