FERMOY TRANSFORMED INTO CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND
The cold snap is moving south as the Fermoy Christmas Wonderland festival arrives at the town park this weekend. The park will be transformed into an alpine village with all the magic of a northern winter you could only dream about. The outdoor ice rink will be the focal point with ice skating for all ages and abilities, catering for up to 32 people at a time.
Watch out for Europe’s largest bouncing snowman, and make sure you have your camera at the ready for some lovely shots in a magical setting. The Avondhu spoke with Peter Kelly (aka Franc) to ascertain how the final preparations are coming along.
“Everything is moving along as it should, Fermoy town is looking fantastic. The place is buzzing, all the shop owners are making a real effort and everyone is getting into the spirit of things.”
MINI VILLAGE
At the town park there will also be a 90ft toboggan slide, a covered walkway connecting the two paths, and a mini village of wooden sheds along the pathways. There will be an area where the kids can post their letters to Santa, numerous stalls from local traders and carol singing by Fermoy Choral Society.
“So, while people stand around and chat they will feel like it’s Christmas with snow falling over the ice rink. We want to recreate the unique atmosphere and cosy feeling of alpine celebrations and I think we will achieve that,” Peter told The Avondhu.
Tom Aherne, owner of the Wagon Tavern told The Avondhu that the comedy club night on December 10 was a great success.
“A great crowd turned out on the night, the lions club were happy as they held a raffle to raise money for Suicide Awareness.”
GREAT BUZZ
PRO for the Fermoy Business Action Group, Ray Murphy added that it is wonderful to see such a great buzz around Fermoy town this week. “Everyone is really getting involved, the businesses are taking part in the promotional week and we are all looking forward to seeing lots of people come through the town in the coming days.”
Cllr Noel McCarthy told The Avondhu that the spirit of the people of Fermoy has been fantastic: “This is what Fermoy is all about, everyone getting behind something that will benefit the whole town. We are still looking for stewards for the weekend ahead so anyone that is interested can contact either myself on 086-3751736 or Christy Roche at 086-8564781.
