Litter blighting new shopping area
People are being asked not to throw litter around the car parking area of the new Blackwater Shopping Centre near Shinnick's Cross on Dublin Road, Fermoy.
With the shopping centre only partially occupied by businesses, cars have taken to parking there and the local Tidy Towns group believe motorists are throwing litter from their vehicles. It's also obvious that litter is simply being thrown over the wall from the footpath running alongside the development.
"We are earnestly asking people to please not discard their litter here," Noel McCarthy, chairman of the Tidy Towns group said this week as he surveyed the scene. "We are asking people to keep their litter in their cars and dispose of it properly when they get home. Pedestrians are asked to do the same," he said.
Tadhg O'Donovan, PRO of the Tidy Towns explained that the site was highlighted to them as a litter blackspot as part of their tidy towns work. "As it's a private development, the council have no remit to go onto the site to clean it up," he explained.
"Attempts are being made to find tenants for the units here but no-one will be interested if the place looks a mess," Noel McCarthy said.
The Tidy Towns group have now decided to give the site a clean up strictly as a once-off. "We'll do it just the once, then we ask people not to throw any more litter in here," Tadhg O'Donovan said.
