SHOP LOCAL CALL MORE CRUCIAL THAN EVER!
Business associations in both Mitchelstown and Fermoy have this week called for people living and working in the area to support local shops and businesses in the lead up to Christmas, writes John Barrett.
The business groups concerned have both launched campaigns to entice shoppers to spend their money locally and save jobs as the economy continues to constrict. The early switching on of the lights in Mitchelstown signaled a renewed effort by traders to fight their corner in the face of stiff competition from the big city multiples.
Traders in Lower Cork Street have been to the fore with a series of initiatives in advance of the festive season. Fermoy Business Association has asked people to shop locally wherever possible.
In a statement to The Avondhu, they said, “Using local Irish producers and suppliers will keep much-needed jobs in the retail and services sector for 2009 and beyond.”
The message seems clear – the next two weeks are absolutely vital for local shops in this region. Your support could yield important dividends in the future.
