Ballyporeen handballers on the wall
Our young handballers, who will be heading to the USA for Christmas 2013, are currently fundraising for this trip. Seven of our young handballers namely Jack Coughlan, Ceallach Hennessy, Jason English, Mickey Maher, John Ryan, Jason Cahill and Adrian English are currently fundraising e.g. selling lines for a handball marathon, which will be held in November and with this fundraising it will help our young lads to make a historic trip to the USA.
The club now have a poster of the seven young lads put up on the outside of the 40/20 court in Church Street. It shows the seven lads picture and highlights the boys’ trip to Los Angeles this coming Christmas. Over the coming months, the club will be doing more fundraising events to help send these young lads to this handball event and the club wish to thank each and everyone who has supported the fundraising efforts so far.
These handball championships in the USA at Christmas will see the top young players from the USA, Mexico, Canada and Ireland taking part. It will be a great experience for our seven young lads and our lads are well capable of doing very well in these championships as all our players have won many national honours and also did very well at the 2012 World championships in City West, Dublin.
So if you are passing the courts in Church Street you will notice the sign of our seven young handballers, who will hopefully do the club proud this Christmas.
SPECIAL THANKS
A special thanks to Adva Sign, Fermoy for making a wonderful job of the poster. Also thanks to Seamus Hennessy for organising and taking the photos and to Enda Maher, our chairman for putting it all together. Well done all!
OLYMPIC HOPES
Four Irish handballers will head to Columbia this week for the World Games. Over 40 sports will be played at this event over 11 days. These games are to develop the popularity of the sports and a delegation from the Olympic committee will be present and two sports will be selected for the next Olympics.
In this handball event being a 1-wall competition all the top countries will be present including USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Columbia, France, UK, Argentina, Ecuador, Ireland and many more. The tournament format sees players compete in a doubles competition.
The Irish team is Mens doubles – Conall McCavitt (Armagh), Killian Carroll (Cork). Ladies doubles: Lorraine Mavern (Down), Amy Corrigan (Mayo). Killian Carroll is no stranger to our players having played and trained in our courts. He is a top young player from Mallow and we wish him and the Irish team the best of luck in these World Games.
COURT TIME
Anyone wishing to use the courts are most welcome. Booking sheets are in operation but with the excellent weather they remain quiet. So anyone interested in using them are most welcome.
