JOBS BLOW FOR MITCHELSTOWN
Fifteen jobs are to go at Horgan’s Delicatessen Supplies in Mitchelstown. The company, which, has been in operation since 1977 and employs 108 people, has blamed the economic downturn for the jobs losses.
Horgan’s supply cheeses, cooked and fermented meats, pate, salami and fresh pasta to supermarkets such as Spar, Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Dunne Stores.
In a statement to The Avondhu, company chairman Michael Horgan said, “During the last number of years Horgan’s Delicatessen Supplies, have continually increased their employment numbers year-on-year, in line with increasing their turnover in a buoyant economy.
"Due to the current economic climate, it is not possible for us to sustain our current level of employment at 108 people. In order to maintain the maximum number of jobs, we are restructuring our business with the unfortunate result that 15 people will lose their jobs.
As our sales and distribution network covers the entire island of Ireland, only a portion of the job losses will affect the local economy. We are confident that the measures now been taken will safeguard the future of the company and maintain viable employment in our local community.”
