NEW PROCESSING PLANT NOT ON THE CARDS - DAIRYGOLD
A suggestion from Cllr Pa O’Driscoll that Dairygold and Glanbia are planning to build a new milk processing plant in Mitchelstown has been denied by Dairygold who say that such a move ‘is not on the cards’, writes Brian Moore.
Cllr O’Driscoll told The Avondhu that he welcomes the indication from the chief executive of Glanbia, John Moloney, that Dairygold and Glanbia farmers ‘may’ enter into a joint venture to build a new milk processing plant in Mitchelstown.
“The vision for agricultural production over the next decade includes a major emphasis on increasing milk production. There are projections that there will be an increase of 15% by 2015, and further growth beyond 2015.
"There will be a need to increase capacity at processing plants, and there may be a need for a new milk processing plant. Mitchelstown is a perfect location for such a plant. We cannot afford to let an opportunity like this slip by.”
However, Dairygold has said that it has ample capacity for milk processing up to and beyond 2015 and that planning has been approved for expanding the plant in Mitchelstown should the need arise.
