Students honoured at CBS awards night in Mitchelstown
The awards night for CBS Secondary Mitchelstown 2012/2013 was a way for the school to recognise excellence among the students for attendance, academic and special achievements.
The importance of community was referred to throughout the awards night, which was generously sponsored by Mitchelstown Credit Union and the role the credit union play in the community at large and within the school was highlighted.
Regular attendance is seen as one of the key factors in success in school and is an important trait for the future workplace. Silver certificates for excellent attendance were presented to Gerard Buckley, Jack Curtin, Kevin Coleman, Shane Connolly, Stephen Dwan, Ciaran Fitzgibbon, Mikey Keating, Sean Leonard, Diarmuid Molan, Denis Murphy and Evin Walsh.
Gold certificates for outstanding attendance were presented to Conor Bradley, Lakshan Dedigamuwa, Aidan Donegan, Kevin Doyle, Danny Keane, Ronan Murphy, Eamonn O’Donnell, Jack O’Donnell, Aidan O’Donovan and Adam Ryan.
Full attendance in one school year is a commendable achievement, but full attendance through five years is a rare and outstanding one. The N.E.W.B. gold medal for full attendance through post-primary was presented to Kevin Doyle by principal, Dr John Desmond on behalf of the board of management.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Class awards for academic excellence were presented for each non-exam class by special guest and distinguished past pupil, Mike Shinnick. The award winners were Kevin Coleman and Richard Maher (1st year), Conor Clancy, Ronan Murphy and Darren McNamara (3rd year), Fergal Fouhy and Keith Fitzgerald (5th year), James Meaney (TY) and Hugh Moloney (LCA1).
The outstanding achievements of the inaugural debating team from 2012/13 were recognised. The six boys involved – Fergal O Baoill (captain), Conor Quane, Padraig Moynihan, Fergal Fouhy, James Meaney and Cormac Sheehan - had been outstanding ambassadors for the school in its first Concern campaign, achieving consistently high standards throughout the competition.
Three special achievements in state exams were recognised. Aaron Walsh was honoured for his third place in Ireland in Technical Graphics in J.C. 2012, while Timmy Corcoran and Steven Coughlan were honoured for achieving third and fourth places respectively in this year’s LCA Graphics and Construction exam.
The achievements of the highest achievers in the state exams were celebrated. Junior Cert student of the year 2012 Fergal Fouhy, LCA Student of the Year 2012 Sean Flynn and Senior student of the year 2012 Brian O’Sullivan, were presented with their awards by special guest Mike Shinnick.
2013 students of the year were rewarded for their outstanding achievements – Shane Fox (Junior Cert), Steven Coughlan (LCA) and Fionán O Súilleabháin (Leaving Cert).
Principal Dr Desmond presented two special principal’s awards. The junior award went to Eoin Fenton for his indomitable spirit and courage. The senior award was presented to Conor Peppard for his admirable community spirit.
Distinguished past pupil, Mike Shinnick addressed the audience and his speech resonated with students and parents alike. His advice of working hard and not giving up, while always following your dream, are messages that are equally relevant to all.
Mike’s own story of his late return to study and successful career clearly showed that he embodied and followed those themes and were inspirational for those present. Dr Desmond commended him on behalf of the school, noting also Mike’s huge contribution to the school over the years, both on parents' council and as board of management chairperson. A most enjoyable evening was completed with light refreshments, courtesy of the parents' council.
