THIRTY-THREE AND COUNTING
A community group that was responsible for the establishment of a ground-breaking scheme of much acclaimed sheltered housing in Mitchelstown, will this week celebrate the 33rd year of its annual Festival of the Galtees.
Funds raised from the festival, first hosted in 1976, went to the construction of the Tearmann Ui Chaoimh development, a sheltered scheme, which still plays a leading role as a top class community based facility in Mitchelstown.
The continued maintenance of the valuable facility is financed by money raised from the festival and other ancillary events throughout the year. The 33rd Festival of the Galtees will be officially opened by the 2007 ‘Queen of the Galtees’, Peg Fitzgerald and her special guest, Sean Sherlock TD, on this Friday, May 30.
The four day programme includes band recitals, open air music, a baby show, cabaret with the Galtee Stompers, a ‘culchie person of the festival’ contest, discos and the crowning of the new festival queen, Kitty Boland, who has been busy ‘selling votes’ as part of the fundraising effort.
