THREAT OF LEGAL ACTION OVER TRAVELLER'S ENCAMPMENT
Cork county councillor Liam O'Doherty has proposed that legal action be taken against a group of Travellers who established an illegal halting site, if they fail to act upon an earlier promise to vacate the location on the Mitchelstown relief road between the Glanworth and Kildorrery roundabout.
Cllr O’Doherty made the proposal at this week’s meeting of Cork County Council after 18 caravans belonging to Traveller groups moved on to the site. Since then, Mr O’Doherty has been inundated with complaints from residents in the area and other locals who are concerned that the Travellers may decide to take permanent residence in the area.
Many of the complainants feel that, if this happens, the entrance into Mitchelstown will become an eyesore. When contacted by gardai, the Travellers gave an undertaking that they would move on after a week. County council engineers and gardai are, however, already collaborating in an effort to find an alternative solution if this does not happen.
