TOWN GETS NEW COMMUNITY GARDA
A community garda has been appointed to Mitchelstown as part of a new nationwide programme by An Garda Siochana, writes Brian Moore.
Garda John Hennessy, a native of Kilteely, Co Limerick, will now take over this new role after spending 10 years on the beat in the town.
“The new initiative will see gardai getting more involved with organisations and groups within the community and as part of a nationwide programme community gardai will be appointed to most larger towns across the country,” commented Garda Hennessy.
“I am here now 10 years and I have links with many of the community associations in the area, I want to strengthen our links with the neighbourhood watch groups and we would also like to set up a business watch programme in Mitchelstown as well,” Garda Hennessy told The Avondhu.
As the first community garda in Mitchelstown, John Hennessy is looking forward to strengthening ties and working with the people of the town.
“I will be calling to businesses, schools and community groups over the next few weeks and I will be available here at the garda station if anyone wants to contact me.”
While many urban areas have had the services of a community garda for many years, now communities in rural areas are set to benefit from this programme.
Garda John Hennessy can be contacted at 025-84833.
