John McCarthy Motors site in Fermoy sold
The sale of the John McCarthy Motors site in Fermoy should prove a boost for the property sector in the Fermoy area, considering it made €125K over the minimum reserve price at the Allsops auction in Dublin on Tuesday.
The 2.9 acre site complete with buildings etc., was sold for €357,500 plus VAT to a West of Ireland bidder. Attempts by The Avondhu to contact the family for a comment prior to going to press were not successful. However, in an interview with this paper last week, a member of the McCarthy family said it was the family's hope to be back in business again by March of next year.
Wayne McCarthy said the family had been ‘overwhelmed’ with the huge amount of support they had received locally and thanked the people for that support.
The family business which opened in May 1961, was closed down in July 2011. The purchase of the garage site is seen as good news for the Fermoy area. "It would be great to see McCarthys back in business there," one caller expressed to The Avondhu on Wednesday, adding: "It's a shame to see a family that was nearly 50 years in business, having to close down like that. There is a lot of goodwill for the McCarthys in the town and it would be great to see them in operation here again."
Meanwhile, Revenue announced that a settlement for €6.2m had been made with John Jospeh McCarthy, the former MD and company director of John McCarthy Motors.
