Katie Taylor is Fermoy bound
Punching well above its weight, a small amateur boxing club in Fermoy has succeeded in hosting a forthcoming tournament that has Ireland's Golden Girl, Katie Taylor, topping the bill. Securing the show is massive coup for St John's Boxing Club, who now operate out of the former Eircom building in Fermoy.
The club's founder member is Pa Flynn - a man who 'worked' Katie's corner on several occasions as she blazed a trail that ultimately led to Olympic gold. The Bray boxer is now one of Ireland foremost sporting heroes as well as being pound for pound, one of the best women fighters the sport has ever seen. 'Matching' such a talent is becoming increasingly difficult, however, Pa believes that Sweden's Patricia Berghult has the necessary CV.
"People rate this girl, Berghult, very highly and she should be capable of putting up a good show, this is a huge tournament for Fermoy and we're delighted to be able hold it in Loreto Sports Complex which is an excellent facility," Pa told The Avondhu this week.
The tournament, which takes place on Saturday, October 11, will feature 9 other quality fights, however, Pa concedes, that Katie is the fighter everyone wants to see.
"It's hard to describe how good a boxer she is, her record speaks for itself and her Fermoy fight is important in terms of preparation for the world championships which take place in South Korea next month," he said.
