OLYMPIC ROWER TO BOYCOTT OPENING CEREMONY
The Olympic rower, Gearoid Towey from Fermoy is, it appears, about to boycott the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing to protest against the Chinese presence in Tibet. It is reported that the internationally renowned rower feels this is an opportunity for all athletes to stand together on the issue and considers the Olympic Games as the perfect platform.
On a delegation level, Pat Hickey, the president of the Olympic Council of Ireland, said there was no question of the Irish team boycotting the games. Gearoid Towey was this week unavailable for comment as he is training in Italy. The unstable political situation in Tibet, the Buddhist monks riots in the streets and the violence plaguing the country, have been making headlines for some time.
The Chinese presence in the country is also a source of contention and protesters have taken to the streets all over the world.
