An 81-year old woman, identified as Mary (Maureen) O’Connell from Cappagh, Ballyhooly, was found dead shortly before 9pm last Monday in the woods near Cappagh, writes Antonia Zane.
The woman, who was living alone and was reported missing around 4pm on Monday last, was last seen near her home at around 2.30pm on Sunday, February 28.
A search party was immediately put in place by Fermoy gardai and locals from the area and after a concerted search, the woman was found deceased just before 9pm, less than a mile away from her home.
The scene was preserved during the night and later visited by a forensic team along with state pathologist, Margaret Bolster. A post mortem was being carried out on Tuesday last.
Inspector Tony O’Sullivan thanked all the neighbours and locals who participated in the search at such a short notice. Gardai are not treating the death as suspicious.
