CHAMPIONS OF CHARITY TOURNAMENT BREAKING DOWN CULTURAL BARRIERS
The Fermoy Meals on Wheels and Blackwater Community Connect Services have confirmed their support for the Champions of Charity soccer tournament which is being held this Sunday, June 19 at the Loreto Complex in Fermoy.
The event will kick into action at 11am and finish at 4pm. It has been organised by local garda member, Kathryn Canty with the support of the Fermoy Meals on Wheels service and the Community Connect Projects.
“The tournament is all about encouraging participation from varied sectors in Fermoy and the immediate areas. It is envisaged a variety of sporting organisations, pub teams and a mix of nationalities will help make up the teams for this year’s competition,” Mary Duane of Fermoy Resource Centre told The Avondhu.
The last tournament, which was a first for Fermoy, was extremely successful with over twenty teams participating, including Brazilian, Polish, Lithuanian and Russian teams. The participants for the first tournament played in a competitive and fair manner, with the honours eventually going to the Brazilian boys.
“The tournament is an excellent way of breaking down barriers and helping all nationalities make new friends and integrate into community life,” Mary added.
For anyone interested in participating in this year’s tournament please contact Kathryn Canty at Fermoy garda station on 025-82100. The registration fee is €100 with 10 members in each team. All proceeds will go to the Meals on Wheels and Community Connect Services, who both provide vital services to older people living in the community.
“We greatly appreciate all support we are receiving for the event from local businesses and from people entering teams,” Mary Duane concluded.
