CLLR MICHAEL HANLEY ELECTED MAYOR OF FERMOY
- ‘I have been intimidated out of standing’ – O’Donovan -
There was somewhat of a turn up for the books at the June meeting of Fermoy Town Council on Tuesday night last when Cllr Michael Hanley was elected as mayor for the coming year.
The independent councillor was actually in line for the chair on foot of a ‘shared understanding’ arrangement but it had been widely predicted in the run-up to the election that Cllr Tadhg O’Donovan of the Labour party would put his name forward and enjoy the backing of a majority of the councillors.
LOCAL MEDIA NIGHTMARE
The meeting began with former Mayor Cllr Pa O’Driscoll thanking the council staff, clerk and engineer for the support he received during his term in office.
“I was proud to serve the people of Fermoy and I want to wish Cllr Hanley all the best for his term as chairman of Fermoy Town Council.”
As the election nomination process got under way, Cllr Tadhg O’Donovan would not allow his name to be put forward for election to the position of mayor.
“After the nightmare I have gone through following a recent article in the local media, I have been intimidated out of standing, I have no option but to refuse the nomination,” Cllr O’Donovan told his fellow councillors.
