FERMOY DRINK DRIVE FIGURES INCREASE DESPITE GARDA CHRISTMAS CRACKDOWN
The number of motorists caught drunk while driving during the festive period in the Fermoy area has risen this year, gardai figures have revealed.
Inspector Tony O’Sullivan of Fermoy gardai told The Avondhu that during December, 7 motorists were arrested for drink driving during the month of December.
“Last year the number was 4, so it is disappointing when figures go up when we know that driving while under the influence is socially unacceptable,” Inspector O’Sullivan added.
“It is particularly worrying that the figures have gone up despite the extremely bad weather we had in December with severe road conditions. Over a holiday period where there are more people on the road innocently visiting friends and relatives, it is hard to understand why people would put their lives at risk by getting behind the wheel while unfit to do so.
“People are still not listening despite all the advertising campaigns. The message must get out to this minority of drivers who continue to risk their lives and the lives of other road users. Don’t risk it,” Inspector O’Sullivan concluded.
