FERMOY FLOOD BARRIER TRIAL WORKS A TREAT
A trial installation of the demountable flood relief barrier system in Fermoy was deemed to be ‘most successful’ when carried out at midnight on Wednesday of last week, October 20, writes Susan Caplice.
Demountable units are required to be erected at Fermoy bridge, Lower Thomas Street and at the Sub- Aqua Club during a flood.
The trial installation was very successful with all elements of the system fitting perfectly into place, and within the allowable installation time. This was carried out by the local authority under the supervision of IBS who manufactured the system.
The Avondhu spoke with one local resident who viewed the trial, which took place after midnight.
He commented, “it was pretty frightening to watch and it seemed such a cumbersome and huge job.”
He added that a huge amount of work was involved and the operation took almost 5 hours.
“What will the next stage be like, it’s all pretty overwhelming but I guess they are talking about a 100-year flood,” he concluded.
