FERMOY WELCOMES QUEEN OF THE RING
The ‘Queen of the Ring’, World boxing champion, Katie Taylor, is to visit Fermoy this weekend to officially open St John’s Boxing Club, writes John Ahern.
Katie is no stranger to the town having fought a Swedish opponent in a tournament organised by Pa Flynn some years ago. According to Pa, Katie was more than willing to help the fledgling club.
“She’s very down to earth, while I worked with her at one stage, all the credit for her phenomenal success is down to herself, she’s a brilliant athlete and a fantastic boxer, as far as boxing is concerned she’s the complete package and it will take someone exceptional to beat her. I have got to know her well and she was very obliging when I asked her to come down, everyone is looking forward to Friday night,” Pa said.
Coached by her father Peter, Katie is reaching the peak of her sporting prowess and a series of world class performances has seen her amass national, European and world titles.
When she’s available the Bray native is a key member of the Irish women’s soccer team - remarkably she’s been able to combine these two very different sporting pursuits. As well as performing the official opening of the new club (in the CYMS Hall at 7.30pm) Katie is also receiving a civic welcome from members of Fermoy Town Council – this is timed for 6.30pm.
Officers of St John’s Boxing Club have pointed out that while children are very welcome to the opening, it’s important that an adult accompany them.
