GARDA STATION TO RETAIN DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS STATUS
In the face of downgrading due to the proposed move of the North Cork divisional garda headquarters from Fermoy to Mallow, it has been confirmed that Fermoy is to hold on to its status as district headquarters and also that the outdated facility is in line for a refurbishment.
The news comes in a reply by former Justice Minister, Brian Lenihan TD to a query by Senator Paul Bradford FG.
The ministerial letter states, “The detailed allocation of garda resources, including accommodation, is a matter for the Garda Commissioner to decide in accordance with his identified operational requirements. The garda accommodation programme is based on agreed priorities which are established by the Garda Siochana in consultation with the Garda representative bodies.
"The 2008 Annual Policing Plan proposes changes to garda regional and divisional boundaries around the country and as part of that plan the divisional headquarters for the Cork North Division will move from Fermoy to Mallow. Fermoy garda station will remain as district headquarters and I am informed by the garda authorities that refurbishment works will be carried out at Fermoy.
"The works will be taken forward by the garda authorities working in close co-operation with the Office of Public Works which has responsibility for the provision and maintenance of garda accommodation".
