JOBS BLOW AT GLANBIA IN CASTLELYONS
The ranks of the unemployed in North East Cork are set to increase once again with the announcement this week of the closure of the chilling department at the Glanbia site in Castlelyons.
It is believed that 11 people will lose their jobs when the chilling department closes in the coming weeks and fears have been expressed for the remaining jobs at the Glanbia mill, also in Castlelyons.
“This is devastating news not only for Castlelyons but for the entire area. I would ask Glanbia to take another look at the situation and, perhaps, work towards saving the jobs at the site,” Cllr Noel McCarthy told The Avondhu.
A spokesperson for Glanbia confirmed to The Avondhu that there would be jobs losses at Castlelyons.
“There is a 30 day consultation process underway with the employees and the unions at the moment in connection with 11 job losses in the consumer foods department in Castlelyons. The industry is very competitive and we need to watch costs, unfortunately this means that there will be job losses at Castlelyons.
"However, while there is a redundancy package on offer, those affected also have the option of redeployment to other facilities within the Glanbia group,” a spokesperson for Glanbia told The Avondhu.
