When they complete their Leaving Cert exams shortly, the work isn't over for one group of Loreto students in Fermoy. Stacey Cronin, Julie Buckley, Lisa Feerick, Christina McGrath, Aine Hussey and Katy Rice are members of the Irish Youth Choir who are facing a busy summer.
The choir is made up of Ireland's finest young singers aged from 18 to 28. Members are selected following auditions held annually in a number of centres nationwide. Following successful auditions, members last for two years after which time singers must re-audition to join that year's intake.
The choir meet annually for an intensive rehearsal course in the summer under the expert tuition of artistic director Greg Beardsell and a team of tutors and vocal coaches. The week culminates in a number of performances by the choir.
The Irish Youth Choir's residential rehearsal course will take place from June 28th to July 5th at the University of Limerick after which they'll give three concerts, the first of which will be in St Mary's Cathedral in Limerick. That'll be followed by a joint concert with the Ulster Youth Choir in Dublin on July 27th and a BBC invitation concert with the Ulster Choir and Ulster Orchestra in the Ulster Hall, Belfast on August 16th.
