OCCASION TO SAVOUR FOR NEW BOXING CLUB
St John’s B.C. has lost no time promoting itself and the new club was firmly in the spotlight last Friday when members welcomed world champion Katie Taylor to the town.
The sporting super woman was in Fermoy to officially open the club’s training quarters in the CYMS Hall. PRO, Pa Flynn said it was a great occasion for everyone concerned.
“We’re delighted with how things went, Katie was very generous with her time and she signed autographs and posed for loads of photographs, she’s very down to earth and we were delighted to have her in Fermoy,” he said.
Prior to the tape cutting ceremony Katie was in Fermoy Town Hall for a civic welcome. Here, Mayor of Fermoy lauded the young woman who has achieved so much in her short sporting life.
“Katie Taylor is an example of what Irish sports people can achieve on the national stage, she has represented Ireland with distinction in both boxing and soccer and has brought great honour to her family, club and country, I was delighted that the council saw fit to grant her a civic welcome,” the Mayor said.
The evening got off to the best possible start when John Tarpey of Supermac’s, Fermoy presented club treasurer, William Hughes with a substantial cheque.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors but especially Supermac’s who’ve given us some very valuable sponsorship, every donation we receive is welcome and it will be put to good use,” William said at the handover.
A fine crowd made their way to the CYMS Hall where St John’s B.C. are now based, following formalities refreshments were served and everyone really enjoyed the occasion. Later Katie was presented with an inscribed crystal vase and a bouquet of flowers.
