O'FLYNN HAILS RE-ELECTION MIRACLE
Relieved Fianna Fail Cllr Frank O’Flynn has described his re-election to Cork County Council as ‘a miracle.’
Speaking to reporters in Mallow following Returning officer Rose Carroll’s announcement that Cllr O’Flynn had won the fourth and final seat in the Fermoy electoral area, the Dairygold employee admitted that he was concerned for his place on the council as his party continued to haemorrhage seats across the country.
“A miracle come true,” Cllr O’Flynn told reporters.
“An outstanding victory for the people of the Fermoy area. I believe that it was my hard work on the ground that ensured the second seat for Fianna Fail. Make no mistake I was worried right up until the final count was announced. With so many strong candidates, all with popular support, it was always going to be a struggle,” he said. Cllr O’Flynn added that there was some sadness to the occasion following the elimination of Fine Gael’s Aileen Pyne, despite their political rivalry.
“I am very sorry for my good friend Aileen Pyne who has given tremendous service to the council and the people and who has been a great colleague of mine on the council. I wish her every success and have no doubt her day will come again,” he claimed.
Cllr O’Flynn was sincerely grateful when asked how much the election meant to him.
“It truly means everything to me. This was a tremendous victory. I knew from the outset it was going to be very difficult. I think the people know the hard work we have put in. I will make no promises only to continue the hard work I have been doing for years,” he concluded.
