Plenty of New Year cheer in Fermoy
New Year's Eve represents the last major blow out before the festive season expires and is traditionally one of the biggest night's of the year for pubs, nightclubs and other centres of entertainment.
Fermoy was reasonably busy as revellers said adieu to 2013 before ringing in 2014 in traditional manner. Given the lateness of the hour and the amount of partying that remains to be done, 'ringing in' is predominantly the preserve of younger folk with old fogies among us opting for more sedate ways of greeting a new calendar year.
As with all things, economics enters the equation and whether it's on the high street or laneway, people are keeping a tighter clutch than ever on their wallets. Interestingly, all the local restaurants reported an exceptionally strong trade before, during and after Christmas - with again, more senior clientele accounting for the bulk of patrons.
While some fast food establishments did close early on New Year's Eve, those who toughed it out, were more than happy to feed the masses.
Members of An Garda Siochana were to the fore after midnight and in the bulk of instances their presence alone is enough to head off any incidents. For taxi drivers willing to plough away until the early hours there are plenty of fares and this particular sector does a considerable service in making sure everyone gets home safely.
