STAFF LAID OFF AT MAJOR CAR DEALERS
Blackwater Motors of Fermoy has laid off 14 of its staff temporarily until January 2 next.
This drastic decision was it is claimed necessary due to the, “non-existence of any government strategy or policy relating to the retail motor industry,” by managing director, Denis Murphy.
Mr Murphy attributes the estimates of over 7,000 people forecast to lose their jobs in the motor industry to the, “ill thought out decisions” made by the Government and “the lack of any coherent policy in relation to the motor industry.”
“We at Blackwater Motors are very angry at the Government at being forced to lay off staff because of their ineptitude. What is happening in the motor industry is reflective of the Government’s inaction and incompetence shown in managing the general economy over the last number of years,” said Mr Murphy.
Among the Government’s decisions, that Mr Murphy blames for bringing down the motor industry are the VRT reduction introduced in July of this year, the failure to ensure that the same rules apply to cars imported from the UK as apply to Irish registered vehicles and the failure to stop illegal trading in used cars.
