TESCO TO OPEN STORE IN FERMOY?
There are unconfirmed reports this week that Tesco may be about to open a store in Fermoy. It is believed that an application will soon be submitted to Cork County Council by a well known developer who cannot be named at this stage.
Cllr Noel McCarthy welcomed the impending good news and said that he is, ‘very confident’ that Tesco will be coming to the town.
“This has to be positive news for the people of Fermoy and surrounding areas. Anything that will mean the creation of jobs and, in turn, bring more people into the town has to be good,” the Labour councillor told The Avondhu.
Cllr Tadhg O’Donovan concurred and added the news was warmly welcomed “as someone who, with the help of two others, collected 3,000 signatures in a short period of time in support of the development of the mart site.”
The councillor added, “The bottom line for the planning authorities, be it Fermoy Town Council or Cork County Council, is to decide if they want to let the town die on its feet or take the necessary steps to enable Fermoy realise its retail and commercial potential".
"Make no mistake about it, in the interim; people will continue to flock in their droves to other retail centres outside the town as many are doing at the moment. This move by the developer will be warmly received,” Cllr O’Donovan said.
