UNDERGROUND CRYPT UNCOVERED IN KILWORTH?
We’ve all heard the saying ‘I wish the ground opened up and swallowed me’, well in Kilworth it almost came true. Residents visiting the cemetery in the centre of the village noticed what appears to be a big trench that has suddenly appeared in one area. It is clear that the ground has collapsed there but it is unclear what has caused this to happen.
“The hole is about 15ft deep and just as wide and what is amazing is that you can see walls and what looks like a vaulted arch that has now been exposed,” said local resident and the man who keeps the graveyard in tip top shape, Jim Nash this week.
Locals contacted the heritage unit at Cork County Council and reported the collapse.
“The county council have cordoned off the site and we have been told that the county archaeologist will be arriving to inspect the area. The collapse seems to be part of an underground crypt. What caused the damage we don’t know but I hope that there aren’t other parts of the cemetery about to collapse as well,” Jim told The Avondhu.
There is also some speculation that the walls and the archway mentioned above may well be part of the original church which makes it all the more interesting.
However, the ‘crypt’ theory may be nearer the mark as a picture of the interior shows some human remains.
The Avondhu contact the heritage unit at Cork County Hall but a spokesperson was unavailable to comment at this time.
