Get Creative at Culture Night in studio 468, Rialto, Dublin 8
Join in the national festivities of Culture Night with a fun and inspiring event that will introduce the new work of resident artist Kathryn Maguire.
This free event is open to everyone on the 21st September from 5 – 9pm at studio 468, St. Andrews Community Centre, South Circular Road, Rialto, Dublin 8 with live jazz music from 6 – 7.30pm.
Come and sample an eclectic mix of multi-cultural food, make seed bombs with the artist in residence, and listen to saxophonist and composer Nick Roth performing a selection of melodies from Jewish, Middle Eastern and Irish traditions in celebration of the universality of music in our world.
Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in the project by creating seed bombs with Kathryn Maguire which be distributed at a later date along the banks of the Grand Canal.
Siobhán Geoghegan, studio 468 team member and Director of Artistic Programme in Common Ground said, ‘We are delighted to support studio 468’s fourth Culture Night event; the studio is a great example of hosting diverse artists in a local community centre – its also a great opportunity to meet Kathryn and find out how she will develop her residency into 2013’.
Kathryn’s collaborative art project, ‘Into Paradise’, involves native Irish, Jewish, Islamic and other culturally diverse communities of place and interest in and around the Rialto and Dublin 8 areas. Through her residency in studio 468 she hopes to “unearth the areas past and juxtapose it with its incredible multi-cultural present, while trying to envision its future with local residents.”
Kathryn seeks to find paradise in the everyday and is inviting people to consider how they see paradise and how it can present itself in everyday life.
The project is inspired by a newspaper article in the Irish press from the 1930’s describing an idyllic, almost Utopian alternative to the tenements of inner city Dublin.
“Up here, in this airy, wind-swept, sun-bathed plateau, far from the squalor that palled their earlier times, there is being written for those reprieved slum denizens a chapter in what might well be titled Paradise Regained.”
