Director Katherine Hunka and the Irish Chamber Orchestra combine Vivaldi’s iconic Four Seasons with Astor Piazzolla’s earthy Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.
Vivaldi’s Seasons has long enjoyed immense popularity and never fails to enchant with its freshness and musical brilliance. Vivaldi uses a colourful language to interweave natural topics into a tapestry of sound that infuses the listener with the sense that they are experiencing each season in turn. Each season features three short movements, each prefaced by a sonnet full of allusions ripe for sonic depiction. Vivaldi musically portrays each Sonnet accurately without losing the overall quality or balance of the work. Enjoy them like you have never heard them before.
In contrast, Piazzolla's variation gives each season only one movement. His seasons depict many moods within a single movement. The Summer movement, contrasts the sassy, rhythmic tango with remnants of the Italian Baroque. An extended, melancholy cello solo dominates Autumn. Slow, sultry, yet intensely rhythmic, Winter gives Katherine Hunka the perfect opportunity for cadenza-like displays of virtuosity. Even more quotes from Vivaldi’s Summer, are woven seamlessly into Piazzolla's intensely emotional Winter tango. In contrast, Spring in Buenos Aires is filled with excitement and a rhythmic electricity that propels this work to its brilliant conclusion. Not to be missed!
