Built in 1250 by the O'Bannon family.

Many people were imprisoned and executed in the castle, and it is supposedly haunted by several spectres, the most terrifying of these beings is a small hunched creature whose apparition is said to be accompanied by a rotting stench of a decomposing corpse and the smell of sulphur.

Since 1991, the castle has been privately owned by Sean Ryan, who is undertaking restoration work.

The southernmost of a pair of canals that connect Dublin, in the east of the country, with the River Shannon in the west, the two canals nearly encircling Dublin's inner city. The last cargo barge passed through the Grand Canal in 1960.

Work on the canal began in 1757. The Grand Canal begins at the River Liffey in Grand Canal Dock and continues through to the River Shannon with various branches, including a link to the River Barrow waterway at Athy
