MITCHELSTOWN OPPOSITION TO PAID PARKING
The shoppers and retailers of Mitchelstown have sent a message to the county council, ‘No to paid parking for Mitchelstown in 2009’.
A council report is due early in the New Year and a council spokesman told The Avondhu that as part of the overall traffic plan ‘Non town council towns’ such as Mitchelstown are being looked at for the introduction of paid parking. This week many shoppers in Mitchelstown were not happy with this plan.
“If they start charging for parking then I won’t come into the town to shop, I can go to Tesco and park there for free, one shopper, Tina O’Brien from Kilbehenny, told The Avondhu.
“I come in every week, we are paying enough without adding more to have to shop in Mitchelstown.”
Retailers are also very unhappy about paid parking, Margaret Hyland at the Favourite said: “I do think it will affect the number of customers coming into town.
"However, parking on the main street can be a problem at times with people leaving their cars there all day so I would like to see a solution to this.”
