Birr Historical Society
An exciting conference drawing attention to and raising awareness of the historic Birr Workhouse through a weekend of talks at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre and site tour. Speakers will include Professor William J. Smyth, John Joe Conwell and Margaret Hogan who will discuss the functioning of the Workhouse system, the Female Orphan Emigration Scheme, Lord Clanricarde and Lord Rosse during the Great Famine and the final years of the Workhouse.
