The Music Department of St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, is currently hosting its series of lunchtime concerts for the second semester. A total of seven concerts, they feature both invited guests and our very talented music students.
The first concert in the series took place on Wednesday, 12 February. A celebration of traditional Irish music, both vocal and instrumental, it featured Síle Denvir of Roinn na Gaeilge on harp and vocals and Thomas Johnston of the Music Department on uileann pipes and whistles. They were also joined by Kieran Munnelly on flute and vocals and by Eoin Ó Beaglaoich on concertina.
The second concert on 19 February featured rock/pop duo We Cut Corners, Conall Ó Breacháin and John Duignan, both of whom were former students of the College. They were accompanied by a backing string quartet. We Cut Corners have gained international reputation following the release of their critically acclaimed first album ‘Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards’, which was nominated for the Choice Music Prize for Irish album of the year (2012). John Buckley of the Music Department, has provided string arrangements for their second album due to be released in April.
The third concert takes place on Wednesday, 26 February, and will be given by our First Year Music and visiting Erasmus students. The programme for this performance can be found here. There will be two other concerts (12 March, and 30 April) given by our music students, comprising music groups and the College Choir under conductor John O’ Flynn.
The world-acclaimed Fidelio Trio, who are also Artists-in-Residence at the College, will perform in two lunchtime concerts on 5 March and 7 May, featuring music by Schumann, Dennehy, Fernandez and Birtwistle.
Each concert runs from 1.15-2pm in the Music Room (B118). All staff, students and visitors to the College are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there!
