Ballyporeen Handball's John Corbett's final fixed for Cashel
John Corbett will be in action in the All-Ireland 60/30 masters B singles final on Friday night, September 13 in Cashel at 7pm. The final has been fixed for Cashel with John meeting William Holden (Kilkenny) in the masters B final. The Cashel venue will be halfway for both lads, John been 30 mins from Cashel and Holden from Kilfane being 35 mins from Cashel.
This venue should suit John as he has played there on many occasions and played his county final against Davy Tobin (Carrick-on-Suir) there this year. Cashel is an excellent venue with full glass back wall and is also a fast court. A big crowd is expected for the final on Friday 13 and as the gallery in Cashel is compact, all our supporters travelling to the match should travel early to get a seat.
NEWS FROM U.S.A.
The big news this week from the United States Handball Association is that the USHA Junior Nationals will include 1 wall competition as well as 4 wall competition. This is the first year 1 wall will be played so it should make it a huge event. This will be great news for our young handballers travelling to the event as many of our young stars are top class 1 wallers. The seven lads travelling, namely John Ryan, Ceallach Hennessy, Jason Cahill, Jason English, Mickey Maher, Jack Coughlan and Adrian English, have excelled in both forms be it 1 wall or 4 wall.
The championships get underway on December 26 and run until December 30 at Los Caballeros Sports Centre, Orange County, California. The opening ceremony on December 26 with the 1 wall events beginning on December 26 and the 4 wall beginning on December 27.
The club have not decided on the hotel where our players will be staying but there is two host hotels, one the Holiday Inn and the other the La Quinta Inn. There will be five age groups for the kids to play in: 11 and under, 13 and under, 15 and under, 17 and under, 19 and under. In both boys and girls and in 1 wall and 4 wall. There will also be a banquet on the evening of December 29.
It should be an exciting time for our young handballers and they will now have to decide the handball events they will play in. Anyone wishing to see more news about the nationals can visit www.ushandball.org for links to the tournament.
