Beast Of ballyhoura looks to hosting European event in 2015
The Beast of Ballyhoura, Ireland’s toughest adventure race is also the best race in the European series – 400km across mountains and 40 hours non stop!
The Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Race is back for 2013 and is scheduled to take place over the August bank holiday weekend from August 2nd to 4th.
Now on the European Adventure Race Circuit, over 50% of the teams participating this year are international: teams are travelling from Denmark, UK, Switzerland, France and Slovenia, as well as Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Achieving the accolade of inclusion in the European Series, not only is the Beast seen across Europe as one of the top 5 races to compete in, scouts will be vetting the race, the route and the Management in order for Ireland and Ballyhoura to host the European Adventure Race finals in 2015.
The Beast of Ballyhoura is a team event comprising a mix of men and women. The goal is to be the first team to get all four members across the finish line together. Teams will mountain run, mountain bike, kayak, abseil, orienteer, climb, run, walk, night navigate, swim, archery and shoot over a period of 40 hours non stop and over 400km on a predetermined route through the lowlands and uplands of Tipperary, Limerick and Cork. Teams will have to navigate the best route and determine the optimum level of equipment, food and pace to win.
Ballyhoura Fáilte, the rural tourism group for the Ballyhoura area of north Cork and east Limerick is teaming up with the Causeway Coast Adventure Racing Club and a number of local businesses to stage the event.
‘The Beast of Ballyhoura’ race will also encompass the 9th annual all-island Inter-Services Challenge. Teams from the various public services including the Army, Garda, Ambulance, Civil Defence and PSNI go head to head to find Ireland's toughest service.
For the first time in Ireland, teams can be tracked on line throughout the whole event. Message boards etc., are also all on-line – see www.beastofballyhoura.com/live.
