Better Life Cycle participants link up in Mitchelstown for charity auction
Next summer a group of local cyclists undertake a journey that will take them from Ireland's most southerly point (Malin) to the country's most northern extreme (Mizen), to raise funds for St. Joseph's Foundation in Charleville. Billed as the 'Better Life Cycle' it's a formidable undertaking for all concerned.
According to organisers the group are continuing to train diligently and should be in peak condition come departure date. Participants hope to raise a substantial amount of money for their chosen charity and the auction in Jackie O'Brien's, Mitchelstown on Friday, 20th December helped kick-start proceedings.
Always a fairly popular meeting place, Jackie O'Brien's has really come into its own in recent times and it capped a hectic 12 months with an incredibly busy Christmas and New Year. Like all success stories, this hasn't happened by accident and a huge amount of work goes in to make sure customers are well looked after - we had another excellent example of this at the auction.
GOOD SUPPORT
Every auction needs an auctioneer and Maurice Walsh seems to be the number one 'go to guy' in Mitchelstown. Kitted out in a Christmas jumper, Maurice extracted the very best price for every item. This, in addition to a well supported raffle, yielded a tidy sum.
The seldom seen but otherwise famous goose also went under the hammer, with Mossie McGrath getting in the final bid. Music on the night was by McGill and there was also a fine spread of food put on for patrons.
As far as the 'Better Life Cycle' is concerned, the countdown is on to a massively ambitious but very commendable venture that will test the physical and mental toughness of these brave men and women. No doubt we'll be hearing a lot more about this unique challenge in the weeks and months ahead.
