CANON'S FIELD APPLICATION 'NOTHING TO DO WITH CORK MARTS SITE PLANS FOR POOL'
The chairman for the Leisure Centre committee (LCC) Ben Lynch has said that a recent application for an extension to the planning permission granted to the LCC for the “Canon’s field” site does not rule out the possibility of the leisure centre being located adjacent to a proposed development at the former grounds of Mitchelstown’s Cork Marts.
A letter from the LCC, under the official letterhead of the Leisure Centre company Mitchelstown Community Centre Ltd appeals for an extension to the granted planning permission on the grounds that the group is awaiting government grants before construction can feasibly begin.
“The delay in availability of Government Grant support for the project is the sole reason for the ongoing delay in the construction. When the position is rectified, construction will commence. Mitchelstown Community Centre Ltd has the financial resources to meet the balance of the required outlay.”
However Mr Lynch this week told The Avondhu that this does not mean that the LCC have given up on the possibility of locating the centre on the Cork Marts site, a proposed development that was refused planning permission on a number of grounds earlier this year.
“This is an application to extend the permission granted for the Canon’s field and is not in any way a reflection on our intentions in terms of the possible location. This has nothing to do with the Cork Marts site.”
