Kildorrery celebrates 2013 Tidy Towns result
This week saw the results for this year's Tidy Towns competition announced and to mark Kildorrery's achievements in the competition thus far, there will be a night of celebrations in Walsh's Bar this Saturday, September 14.
This year saw Kildorrery's marks increase by 11 on last year with a final count of 279, and with all of the hard work and foundations that were laid this year, the village hopes to have a stronger standing next year and indeed, in the years to come.
In the report, Kildorrery was described as 'excelling' in the area of landscaping, while the individual houses on the approach roads were also commended for adding colour as people enter the village.
Embracing somewhat of a poetic tongue themselves, the adjudicator said: "Perched atop a hill with panoramic views all round, one can understand how poets who left home felt nostalgic for their native Kildorrery. Inspiration comes easy in a natural setting like this."
The committee members congratulated Castletownroche and Kilworth who were at the awards ceremony.
Kildorrery came second in the North Cork Litter Challenge this year and wish to thank the litter pickers and FAS team, who kept the village in tip-top shape throughout the year and also maintained all of the flower and shrub displays. Kildorrery have a strong tradition in the litter challenge, as they won it for the North Cork region in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
LOOKING AHEAD
This year will prove to be another busy one for Kildorrery Community Development Association and they have just spent another €5,000 of grant aid from Ballyhoura Development on shrubs and flowers on the main street, in the garden of Thatch & Thyme and Ger in Centra also supported the flower beds at the shop.
"Thanks to everyone for painting, cleaning and putting out flower displays, which really added to the village life all summer. The sucess of Thatch & Thyme and the FÁS team returning to main street greatly added to a good buzz about the place. It is great to see people around the village again and hopefully business opportunities will present themselves going forward. Thanks to everyone, see you all this Saturday night in Walsh's Bar and thanks to Liam O'Sullivan for providing entertainment on the night," Tomas Keating of the Tidy Towns group said.
