MITCHELSTOWN FIGHT CHAMP TO BOX FOR IRELAND
All-Ireland boxing champion, Danny Keating has been chosen to represent his country at an upcoming international competition in London. Danny (12) is the first Mitchelstown boxer to bring an All-Ireland medal back to his North Cork home.
“Danny has been training hard over the past few months and we are all looking forward to heading over to London in June,” Danny’s mother, Mags Keating told The Avondhu.
“I am delighted to be representing Ireland and Mitchelstown at the under 12 46kgs class. This is Ireland v England so I am training twice a week and travelling to the National Stadium in Dublin once a week to train with team Ireland,” Danny, who trains upstairs at Paki Fitz’s Bar in the town, told The Avondhu.
“We have a fantastic boxing club here in Mitchelstown that is giving many young people an opportunity to achieve great things through the sport but it is a disgrace that they have no proper facilities to train.
"It’s great that Paki Fitz’s Bar has allowed the use of their room but the club needs a place of their own. The club can pay rent and we have a building sitting empty in the square that would be perfect for the club. Forrest Hall is just sitting there empty, this would make a great site for the Mitchelstown Boxing Club and would enhance the chances of other young people to bring glory back to this town,” community activist and Danny’s grandfather, Timmy ‘Rancher’ White told The Avondhu.
The Avondhu wishes the best of luck to Danny Keating and the rest of the Irish boxing team.
