MITCHELSTOWN SMELL GETTING UP PEOPLE NOSES!
Is Mitchelstown the smelliest town in Ireland? Many residents are convinced that the odor which has lingered over the town for the past few weeks is not only damaging the community’s image but is also affecting their quality of life. The smell, which has been quite appalling at times, has led to many people apologizing to visitors to the town.
“We had family visiting last week and I have to say I was ashamed at the smell that was everywhere. One member of our group didn’t want to get out of the car it was so bad,” one local resident, who did not wish to be identified, told The Avondhu.
The source of the odour according to a number of ex Dairygold employees is the result of wastewater treatment at the plant.
The Avondhu put this to Dairygold and received the following statement, “Intermittent odour from the wastewater treatment plant at Dairygold’s Castle Farm facility, which has occurred over the summer, arose from some temporary overload instances of the treatment plant on the site.
"Remedial action is being taken to resolve the risk of odour release from the treatment plant when it is running near full capacity. Proposals are being considered with regard to new anaerobic digestor technology to supplement currently used waste treatment technologies. Planning approval is awaited from the local authority for some minor construction within the site to accommodate remediation applications.”
Local resident Kay Dawson contacted The Avondhu to complain about the smell in the town.
“We are trying to market the town in an effort to create jobs and this is having a very detrimental effect. Not only are visitors very unlikely to want to return to Mitchelstown the quality of life for the local residents is also being very badly affected,” Ms Dawson said.
