Mitchelstown people shocked at massive drug seizure
A man living in the town said that it was a shock to find out about such a big seizure in the local area, but he added that the harsh reality is that every village and town in Ireland is affected by drugs.
People in the Mitchelstown area were shocked and dismayed on Friday morning last, as news broke that €134,000 worth of cannabis plants and herb were seized in a planned search of a rental house in Drough, Mitchelstown.
A male in his 40s was arrested and detained at Mitchelstown Garda Station under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996. He was released from custody late Thursday night and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The man is known to be living in the town, but was renting the premises in Drough, where the substantial grow house was located.
This follows on from a seizure of €640,000 in Rathcormac in November and in October, €16,000 worth of cannabis was seized during a house search in Mitchelstown.
A man living in the town said that it was a shock to find out about such a big seizure in the local area, but he added that the harsh reality is that every village and town in Ireland is affected by drugs.
"Everyone is shocked and appalled, but this is happening everywhere. It is rife across the country, but of course, it is always a shock when it's on your doorstep.
"Every town in Ireland has been hit by the scourge of drugs and cannabis is unfortunately widely available. The people using it are keeping the criminals in business and keeping the wheel turning," he told The Avondhu.
Meanwhile, people living in the area of Drough were shocked that something so criminal was happening right on their doorstep.
