NEW PARISH PRIEST IN MITCHELSTOWN
The news of Bishop Magee’s decision to appoint Fr Michael Fitzgerald as the new parish priest of Mitchelstown has been greeted with great enthusiasm in the parish.
Canon O’Leary, who recently celebrated his golden jubilee, had offered his retirement, so the vacancy occurred.
People were also overjoyed to learn that the popular Canon will remain on in the parish as a curate.
Having spent over fourteen years in Mitchelstown, he made many good friends and his recent golden jubilee bore testimony to his huge popularity. There will be a special ceremony at the vigil Mass on Saturday, September 6 to celebrate the elevation of Fr. Michael to the position of parish priest.
Bishop John Magee will officiate at the induction ceremony and, to celebrate the occasion with his parishioners, Fr. Fitzgerald is inviting everyone to the convent school hall for refreshments afterwards.
The committee that arranged the Canon O’Leary’s golden jubilee function are also organising this event and want to extend a welcome to everyone to attend the Mass and the little celebration afterwards.
Speaking to The Avondhu, Kayren Hayes of the organising committee stressed that, “everyone is most welcome, and we hope there will be a big attendance to celebrate this historic event.”
