TOWN CO-ORDINATOR APPOINTED FOR MITCHELSTOWN
The Avondhu can this week confirm that Waterford native Paul Swift has been appointment business development executive for Mitchelstown. Paul will work to implement the Socio-Economic Strategy commissioned by The Mitchelstown Forum.
When contacted, Forum chairman Tom Whelton stated; “This is an important development in the fight to revitalise our town. Paul’s brief will be to implement the actions proposed in the strategy document, work with local groups to identify new initiatives and promote Mitchelstown as a centre for industrial and commercial development.’’
The appointment has been a long time coming. It is now over two years since the Socio-Economic Strategy was published and the report identified the urgent need for a town co-ordinator role to help address Mitchelstown’s economic problems.
“Since it was published we are well aware that there have been more job losses across the employment sectors. When the Forum put its case to the development agencies such as Enterprise Ireland, FAS, North Cork Enterprise Board and Ballyhoura Development as well as Dairygold, those organisations committed funds to implement the strategy and the role of town co-ordinator was refined to that of a business development executive,” a statement from the Mitchelstown Forum read.
The initial appointment is for a twelve month period but Tom Whelton is confident that funds will be forthcoming for an extension of that timeframe.
"Paul is a graduate of Waterford Institute of Technology. He is 33 years old and over the past few years has worked in the South East with a number of the main development agencies as well as having links with local authorities and multi-national companies in the region. We are confident that he can bring that experience to Mitchelstown and work with all of the local business and community groups to bring much-needed opportunities and developments to Mitchelstown," Tom concluded, confirming that the appointment commences from July 1.
