WHAT'S NEXT - FIRE AND A PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS?
First it was major flooding, then sub-zero temperatures, freezing fog and snow, now it seems we should brace ourselves for the chance of more major flooding.
As the thaw began this week and councils across the country warned of water shortages, Met Eireann announced that gale force winds and heavy rainfall was next on the list of weather for the winter of 2009/2010.
“With the ground not fully thawed out, there is a very high chance of flooding as the weather takes another turn for the worse. Munster and parts of the midlands can expect gale force wind and very high rainfall over the next few days,” a spokesperson for Met Eireann said.
While temperatures are expected to rise before the end of the week many people are now preparing themselves for the aftermath of the snow and the chance of renewed flooding.
“We were flooded before Christmas, our pipes froze and burst a few days ago and now we have more rain and a chance of more flooding. What’s next?” Pat O’Mahony from Fermoy said.
“After all this, all I can say is that we had better get a scorcher of a summer!” Pat concluded.
