Wellington Monument Report an error with this listing

Obelisk structure is 62 metres tall, making it the largest obelisk in Europe. The Wellington Testimonial was built to commemorate the victories of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Work began on the monument in 1817 but due to cost difficulties, it was unfinished until 18 June 1861.

18th century building located on the north bank of the River Liffey which now houses the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

As the port of Dublin moved further downriver, the building's original use for collecting custom duties became obsolete.

During the Anglo-Irish War in 1921, the Irish Republican Army burnt down the Custom House, in an attempt to disrupt British rule. After the Anglo-Irish Treaty, it was restored by the Irish Free State government.

Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I. The campus occupies 190,000 m2 (47 acres), with many buildings, both old and new, ranged around large courts (known as "squares") and two playing fields.

Catholics were first admitted in 1793, prior to which only Protestants could attend.

The institution is ranked highest in Ireland in surveys of third level educational institutions.
