FABULOUS FEMALES OF IRISH FOLKLORE TAKE CENTRE STAGE
AT THE NATIONAL LEPRECHAUN MUSEUM
Running from 27th February to 8th March
The National Leprechaun Museum will celebrate the forgotten women of Irish folklore with a one woman show, ‘Fabulous Females’, running nightly from 27th February to 8th March 2014. Discover the vital, yet overlooked role of women in Irish mythology, the National Leprechaun Museum step beyond male dominated Irish folklore with actress Ita Fitzmahony bringing ‘Fabulous Females’ to life under the direction of Antoinette Duffy.

While 2013 was certainly the year of the one man show, 2014 will see the one woman show take centre stage. ‘Fabulous Females’ aims to reconnect audiences with the incredible women of oral folklore. Irish legends tend to focus on great male warriors such as Fionn McCumhaill, Cúchulainn and Oisín. These legends, originally preserved through oral history, have been written down time and time again by men, whereas females have taken a back seat. Their role diminished, they have been relegated to wives, mothers, messengers, or lovers to lead men astray; full of sorrow and destruction. This brand new one woman production will showcase the power of those forgotten female legends.
A pillar of the National Leprechaun Museum, Ita Fitzmahony has been a storyteller at the museum since it opened its doors in 2010. She has performed in many of the museum’s celebrated and sold out Halloween, Culture Night and Christmas shows. With performances at Ten Days in Dublin and at the ‘Big Green Apple’ theatre event in Liberty Hall under her belt, Ita has also studied with the Gaiety and Dublin (Oscar) Schools of Acting.
Director Antoinette Duffy has over twenty five years of theatre experience under her belt. A teacher for the Gaiety School of Acting and devising tutor on the MA Theatre course with NUI Maynooth, Antoinette is also a lecturer in drama education for the DIT School of Social Sciences and Law, and works as a freelance director and workshop facilitator.
The National Leprechaun Museum is the world’s first interactive Irish folklore museum dedicated to bringing Irish mythology and folklore to life. The museum’s staff is always on hand to guide visitors through the world of fairies, banshees, brave Celtic warriors and of course, the leprechaun himself. Open daily from 10am until 6pm.
